Teach • Reach • Bless

97% of Needed $1.5 Million has been Committed – and 28% Collected
The Teach • Reach • Bless campaign to raise and collect $1.5 million to build and furnish a residence hall on the campus of Africa University will change lives. The dorm will enable more female students to live on campus, meaning they will not need to find off-campus housing and commute to class – situations that make them vulnerable to untenable situations.

To date, commitments of $1,452,722.26 have been made toward the $1.5 million needed to break ground – and $413,441.74 has been collected. Thank you for your support, and for your commitment to improving the education and wellness of women today for a better Africa tomorrow.

Conference Staff

Rev. Dr. Gary George and Rev. Steve Court to Retire in June 2021
Bishop Tracy S. Malone announces that two members of the East Ohio Conference Executive Staff Team have submitted their requests to retire from active ministry. Assistant to the Bishop the Rev. Dr. Gary George and Director of Connectional Ministries the Rev. Steven Court each intend to retire effective June 30, 2021.

“As I share plans for retirement, I praise God for the opportunities I have been given to serve in the body of Christ through The United Methodist Church,” Court shared.

“It has been a blessing and joy to serve the Lord Jesus Christ over the course of my 41 years of service in the East Ohio Conference as a pastor, district superintendent, and assistant to the bishop,” said George.

Betsy Stewart to Retire at Year’s End
Since 1994 Betsy Stewart has walked beside both the clergy who shepherd our East Ohio Conference congregations and faith communities and the Conference staff who equip and support them. As Benefits Manager she has been the liaison between benefit carriers and the Conference as the plan sponsor. She’s worked with the EOC Board of Benefits to coordinate plan document language, Conference policies, and participant eligibility, and then assisted pastors and church leadership to get answers to their questions and to create implementation processes. Stewart will retire effective December 31.

“I have always felt I was blessed to be in my position at East Ohio, and for many reasons; personally, professionally and spiritually. For those who I have served, especially for persons during life’s events, I tried to be a helpful resource, to the best of my ability,” Stewart said.

The Advance
The Advance for Christ is an official program within The United Methodist Church through which donors may designate giving to specific projects and purposes. Advance giving goes the “second mile” in generosity. It is in addition to our covenant promise to support The UMC through shared ministry funds (budgeted apportionments). The Advance forwards 100% of your donation to the specific project indicated in your gift. This is possible because apportionments pay for the communication and financial networks that administer the Advance.

Conference Advance
A Conference Advance project directs funds to a mission partner or purpose that has been reviewed and approved by the EOCUMC Mission Awareness Committee. If you are part of a mission that wants to become an Advance, contact the superintendent in your district. The application deadline is January 15, 2021 for approval or renewal for the 2021-2022 conference year.  Please e-mail Rev. Kathy Dickriede or e-mail Rev. Bruce Becker if you have any questions.

I Am Greta
I Am Greta is incredibly intimate and personal, but somewhat rambling, like high-quality home videos. Because there is no strong editorial hand at work, at times the film seems rather mundane and repetitive. But I haven’t stopped thinking about it for days. Greta Thunberg shows us that a life committed to something that really matters is a life worth living. This sounds mighty familiar to Wesleyan Christians; perhaps it’s time to put our faith to work, too.
