Guidelines for Phased-in Reopening of EOC Church Buildings
Bishop Tracy S. Malone and the Extended Cabinet offer these guidelines for our churches to do less harm while figuring out new ways to do good among the new complex reality in which we are living and ministering.
We have not set firm dates for the different phases described in these guidelines so that we can monitor and react to rapidly changing conditions. It is possible that progress may not be linear; we might have to go back and forth between different phases and possibly make changes when we learn new things, if that is the most loving thing to do.
The homepage of the Conference website displays the current recommended phase. We continue to be in Phase 1, which began in March.
A Deeper Church Dive with RE: RElate, REcommit, & RElaunch
East Ohio Conference Congregational Vitality is offering a free web-based learning and coaching experience designed to help church teams explore opportunities and talk about and develop a strategy to RElate, REcommit, and RElaunch your church.
This learning opportunity consists of three webinars with information presented by author and coach Kay Kotan. Coaching for churches is included in this cohort. The church coaching sessions will be scheduled with each church individually.
RE will assist participants to: RElate in this virtual world with new and existing people; REcommit to the mission and the community we are called to reach; and RElaunch the church. Learn more and register your church team.
Teach • Reach • Bless
Latest Resource: Labels for Offering Envelopes
The Teach • Reach • Bless campaign was launched because we in the East Ohio Conference are committed to improving the education and wellness of women today for a better Africa tomorrow. To reach our goal of building a residence hall for female students on the campus of Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe we need to raise – and collect – $1.5 million dollars.
We are getting close to raising the money – but construction on the dorm will not begin until we have collected the $1.5 million needed to complete the project. To assist churches in receiving funds for the campaign, we have created a downloadable image that can be printed on Avery 5284 labels, turning any envelope into a Teach • Reach • Bless envelope.
View other downloadable Teach • Reach • Bless resources. The June 1 E-News will have a campaign financial update as well as downloadable resources for children and youth ministry.
Midwest Mission June Donation Drive
The Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) is scheduled, on June 16, to pick up items you wish to donate to the Mission. Items for pickup need to be dropped off at select locations in each district of our Conference. Most locations will offer “no contact” drop-offs – and will not receive monetary donations.
To mail financial donations, please be sure to include Fund 9944 MMDC on the check before sending it to P.O. Box 76019, Cleveland, OH 44101-4755. You may also send monetary donations directly to MMDC at 1001 Mission Drive, Pawnee, IL 62558.
This June collection is to help meet immediate needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. At Annual Conference in September we will collect items for both MMDC and Eastbrook Mission Barn. Visit the Mission News page for more details about the June collection.

The Media Center is featuring the following resources from our Miscellaneous section:
- Autism; A Christian Response explores God’s “knitting pattern” for persons with ASD, discuss some of the differences you might see, and give you some practical tools for full inclusion of children and adults with ASD in the life of your church.
- Beyond Our Differences calls upon key religious leaders, politicians, and luminaries in their fields and it asks what it is that inspires them to affect positive change.
- Making Room; Cultivating Communities of Inclusion leads you through the G.L.U.E. process, giving you specific practice in putting together individual church plans for both children and adults with disabilities.
- This Far By Faith; An African-American Spiritual Journey explores the epic struggle of a people whose faith was continually tested, and how that faith became a force for social change that helped transform America socially, politically and culturally.
- Trombone Player Wanted helps your church staff, leaders, or persons in your church grow to use their strengths as God intended.
Message in the Movies
There is no clear plotline to The Assistant – it is just one day in the life of a young office worker – and much of the dialogue (especially on the receiving side of a phone conversation) is indistinct. The movie has no grand speeches or dramatic high points, but it is nevertheless haunting and memorable, primarily due to the performance of Julia Garner (which I consider one of the best of this year). While the presence of Harvey Weinstein haunts this movie, I found its impact to be greater than a commentary on show business. The Assistant reminded me of the thousands of employees (including women) who are daily mistreated with objectification and disrespect. To view the world with the eyes of Christ is to see each person as something of infinite value. As Jane struggles with her moral issues, we are invited to come along.
Please pray for the families of:
- George E. Schreckengost, retired Elder, died May 8.
- John G. McLachlan, retired Elder, died May 3.
- Administrative – Assistant Canton Calvary Mission
- Church Custodian – Willoughby UMC
- Program Assistant – The Nehemiah Mission
