General Conference
Judicial Council Issues Decision
Legislation setting special provisions for United Methodist churches deciding to leave the denomination took effect immediately at the end of the special General Conference last February, the church’s top court has ruled.
In making that determination, the United Methodist Judicial Council at least temporarily bypassed the assertion from a Commission on General Conference investigation that improper voting meant the vote to substitute parts of Petition 90066, the disaffiliation petition, was null and void.
The court decided to hold the request submitted by the Council of Bishops on the question of improper voting to its next session. In Decision 1386, the Judicial Council noted that “because of our inability to get the information requested during oral argument” it would be best to re-schedule the case.
On a related matter, the Judicial Council issued no opinion on the “constitutionality, meaning, application or effect” of certain petitions of the Traditional Plan, also adopted in February.

Missions
UMVIM Team Leader Training – November 9
Training one member of your United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) team as a team leader enables the entire team to apply for mission team scholarships and grants.
The Canal District is underwriting the cost of UMVIM team leader training November 9 at Heart 4 the City in Akron. This means participants will pay the special price of only $10 (instead of the regular $35) to be trained as a team leader. It’s a win-win opportunity. Be trained for less and be eligible to apply for cost-saving scholarships and grants.

Message in the Movies
Transit
Transit is the latest film from the provocative German director Christian Petzold. The movie is based on a novel from 1944 by Anna Seghers depicting the Nazi occupation of France. Transit begins its story in modern-day Paris and there are no signs of swastikas anywhere, but one thing is clear: the government is making sweeps to round up people to send to prison camps and if you want to save your life, you need to come up with a plan to get out.
Georg (Rogowski) needs to get out of the country (for unspecified reasons) and he has friends who are setting up the details to leave from Marseilles to the United States and from there to Mexico. Before he leaves, he is instructed to deliver a couple of letters to a writer named Weidel. When he arrives at the writer’s apartment and discovers that Weidel has committed suicide, he grabs a manuscript as well as other personal belongings of the writer and heads to Marseilles. There’s now an opportunity for Georg to assume a new identity and in ways that will help his exodus.
