July 10, 2013 -On Sunday, Berlin Center United Methodist Church (Mahoning Valley District) held a prayer vigil for the 19 firefighters killed last week in Arizona. More than 20 firefighters dressed in blue, representing departments from Berlin Center, Ellsworth, North Jackson and Deerfield, and a township representative, from Lake Milton, worshipped with the congregation.
“They were there to pray for the fallen firefighters families and the congregation was there to encourage them in their service in our communities,” said the Rev. Mark Vincent. “The emphasis I placed in the worship was to pray for the 19 firefighters that died and to appreciate our local firefighters who protect and keep us safe.”
A video tribute to the fallen Yarnell Hotshot Crew was played, the name of each crew member who died was read, hats were raised to honor the fallen firefighters, and the fire siren sounded.
“God is not separated by time or distance. We too can grieve and pray for God’s peace for these fallen firefighters’ families,” Vincent said. “We also can unite ourselves with our townships to pray and encourage our own firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way for us.”
