The United Methodist Church

Our mission is: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our vision for how we live into our mission is: to form disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections.

Appointments

Bishop Jung Appoints the Rev. Dr. Bill Liming Central Valley District Superintendent
Bishop Hee-Soo Jung is grateful to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Bill Liming to the East Ohio Conference Cabinet. He will serve as superintendent of the Central Valley District effective July 1.

“I have felt the steadiness of the Holy Spirit from the time I was a child in both seasons of joy and seasons of great difficulty,” said Liming, who felt the call to ministry at the age of 14. “I can’t imagine where I would be today without the loving presence of Christ. It is our Savior Jesus Christ who strengthens us daily and opens doors of life we could have never imagined. I am excited about this new season serving in a new way. May our lives bear witness to what only God can do in our faithful churches of East Ohio!”

Bishop Jung said, “Bill brings a deep calling to ministry, a pastor’s heart shaped by faithful service in local churches, and trusted wisdom through his leadership across our Conference. He leads with spiritual depth and grace, building empathetic and authentic relationships with clergy and lay leaders alike. I am confident his leadership will help strengthen the body of Christ for the mission before us.”

Storyboard: Faith Witness Transformation
Episode 75 Black History Beyond February

Storyboard: Faith Witness Transformation is a podcast highlighting ministries across the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church that are transforming lives locally, nationally, and globally. Produced twice-a-month by EOC Communications, each podcast episode focuses on one of the core values of the #BeUMC campaign: Disciple Making; Belonging & Inclusion; Influence, Connection & Impact; and Experience of God through The United Methodist Church.

Episode 75 “Belonging & Inclusion: Embodying Black History Beyond February” is a conversation with Rev. Leo Cunningham of Toledo St. Paul’s UMC, Pastor Tennille Power of North Olmsted and Rockport UMCs, and Multicultural Ministries Director Will Fenton-Jones.

“This year I was thinking how do we slow down and ask, ‘How does Black History Month become more than just remembering the past but something that shapes who we are right now?’” Fenton-Jones shared.

“You start by acknowledging it (Black history) and bringing it to the forefront, by becoming a fabric of worship and liturgy for the year. That’s where it begins,” Power offered.

Cunningham said, “For me the Black Church has always been that we see the world for what it is, but we also see the world for what it could be, and we have hope that because of God, it’s going to get better.”

Bishop’s Office

Bishop Hee-Soo Jung Offers His Reflection on Black History Month
Black History Month invites the Church not only to remember, but to repent, to listen, and to see again. At the center of Scripture stands a God who does not look away.

“I have observed the misery of my people …  I have heard their cry …  I know their suffering, and I have come down to deliver them.” – Exodus 3:7

This is not a distant God. This is a God who enters pain, who stands with the wounded, who interrupts history with compassion.

Black spirituality was born from this holy interruption. From chains and cotton fields, from segregated streets and broken schools, a faith emerged that refused to surrender dignity. Songs became sermons. Tears became theology. The body became a testimony that said, “we are still here.” The Civil Rights Movement was not first a political uprising; it was a spiritual awakening. The march was prayer in practice. The pulpit was for breath. The cruciform love was carried again in American history.

Leaders like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and John Lewis did not ask merely for inclusion. They proclaimed a Gospel that refused to separate salvation from justice, or faith from flesh.

To honor Black History Month faithfully is to inherit its holy restlessness, to become a Church that refuses to cross rivers alone, that carries the wounded with us, that remembers the past not to glorify it, but to keep it from repeating.

The Spirit is still calling. And the future of the Gospel depends on whether we are willing, once again, to step into the water.

Financial & Administrative Services

Compass Webinar for Clergy – February 12
Wespath will host a live webinar about the new Compass clergy retirement plan from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, February 12. The focus of the webinar will be how Compass works, common questions about Compass, and the partnership between local churches, annual conferences, and Wespath in supporting retirement benefits.

Register to participate in the Compass webinar.

Local Churches Receive a Compass Holiday for 2026
A reminder that Conference Council on Finance & Administration approved a Compass holiday for local churches in 2026 – meaning they will not be billed this year for the flat rate, the 3% pensionable pay, and the 4% church match for the new Compass Clergy Retirement plan went into effect on January 1.

In 2027, local churches will be billed for those items beginning on January 1, so they will need to budget for Compass during 2026 charge conferences.

Learn about the Compass Clergy Retirement plan on the EOC website.

Disaster Response Committee Chair Offers Insight on ERT Training
“Nine individuals learned skills to be a caring presence to survivors of disasters by completing an 8-hour Emergency Response Team (ERT) Basic course this January at LaPorte UMC. The nine will receive certification and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-recognized United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) badges that allows them to follow First Responders after disaster strikes,” said Tom King in a written report to the East Ohio Conference.

“The skills learned are to stabilize homes from further damage from weather and the elements, such as mucking out deposited mud and silt from floods, removing carpeting and drywall subject to mold, and tarping over holes in roofs. But most importantly, they learned to offer help to survivors who need to work through trauma and grief stages to reinvest in their new circumstances. As a Christian presence, ERT-trained people are there to listen, to help with decisions on what to keep, what to discard, and to lend hope for reclaiming their home and new life,” King, the EOC Disaster Response Committee chairperson, added.

If you have questions about disaster response and/or ERT training, please e-mail Tom King. He reminds us that ERT teams responding with relief skills are often followed by UMVIM Long-Term Recovery teams – and that each member of a team carries home their “Christ moments” that feed their spiritual growth and continued service.

Royal Family KIDS Camp – EOC Advanced Special #9965
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” – James 1:27

The East Ohio Conference Royal Family KIDS Camp (RFKC) provides 200 children (of the 20,000 in the Ohio foster care system) five days of residential camp experience. We don’t think we can “fix” anyone’s pain in less than a week, much less in a lifetime, but we seek moments that matter – moments of hope, joy, and love with 100 adults at each camp that can bring deep and lasting healing.

Our goal now is to strengthen the volunteer base of our existing camps sponsored by Willoughby UMC, Strongsville UMC, Northampton UMC, and the St. Clairsville Ohio Valley area. If two people from your church commit to attending training and camp, we could bring one more child to camp.

Engagement with Children, Youth & Young Adults

The State of Ministry with Children, Youth, and Young Adults
For a variety of reasons, reported average worship attendance in the Ohio Episcopal Area fell from 160,987 in 2014 to 99,584 in 2024. In 2024, 75% of churches reported no young adults in faith formation, 54% reported having no youth, and 45% reported no children in attendance. Sunday School participation dropped from 28% of worshipers to 11% during that 10-year period. Despite these statistics, we believe faith formation remains essential across generations, and traditional Sunday School shouldn’t be the sole model for teaching the Word of God to grow disciples.

This moment is an invitation for leaders in local churches to reimagine how we nurture members, welcome new generations, and build communities of faith that reflect the hope of the Gospel. The Connectional Ministries Office Engagement with Children, Youth, and Young Adults team is your partner in this effort. In the months ahead, we will explore a variety of approaches to faith formation and worship that foster authentic relationships, engage youth and young adults, and support families in meaningful ways.

We ask every local church congregation to join us in prayer, reflection, and active experimentation. Listen to your neighbors. Pay attention to the voices of children, youth, and young adults within and beyond your walls. Together, we can cultivate faith formation that brings vitality to our congregations and renewed hope to our communities. The future of our shared ministry depends on our willingness to act now – faithfully, humbly, and together.

If you would like to set up a coaching call to explore how to begin this work, please e-mail Rev. Ann Marie Carley, director of Engagement with Children, Youth, and Young Adults, or call her at (380) 223-9369. You may also e-mail Tim Beck, associate director of Engagement with Youth, or call him at (330) 499-3972 ext. 103.

Her presentation will offer a historical lens for lay leadership, inviting participants to learn from our roots, examine patterns that have shaped the Church, and discern how history can guide us toward a more equitable and vibrant future for all Methodists.

Woven throughout the event will be meaningful opportunities for laity to connect with one another across roles, affinity groups, regions, and experiences. Participants will have time to share stories, support one another, and learn and dream together in structured and informal conversation.
