Jessica Vargo is leaving her position as treasurer and director of administrative services with the East Ohio Conference effective January 3, 2017. She is returning to her alma mater, where she will be named chief financial officer of the Kent State University Foundation.
“The East Ohio Conference has been blessed by Jessica’s strong and dedicated leadership for almost 15 years. She has demonstrated her love for the church through her faithful service. We send her forth with blessings as she embraces this new work opportunity at Kent State University,” said Bishop Tracy S. Malone.
“This decision was a difficult one but after much prayer and discernment I feel the opportunity for a new challenge to help my alma mater at this time in my life seems right,” Vargo said.
A life-long United Methodist, Vargo has been active at all levels of the denomination. She served as chairperson of the East Ohio Conference delegations to General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference in 2008 and 2016. She was a member of the conference’s delegations in 2012, and that year became the first woman to be chairperson of the Finance and Administration Legislative Committee at General Conference. Vargo has also represented the East Ohio Conference while serving on boards and agencies of the general church.
“My love for the church and great respect for those who have worked with me over the years demands that I allow for the smoothest of transitions between me and my successor. Consequently, I have offered to work contractually for the first quarter of 2017 as needed to ensure this smooth transition,” she said.
The Conference Council of Finance and Administration will consult with other stakeholders to create a job description and conduct a search for an appropriate replacement.
“These past 15 years have truly been a blessing, and with all sincerity I say ‘thank you!’ Vargo said. “I pray that God continues to bless the churches and people of the East Ohio Conference.”
