February is Black History Month, a time to honor the contributions of Black Americans, reflect on our shared history, and engage in the ongoing work of racial justice.
You are invited to join pastors, congregations, and faith communities across the East Ohio Conference throughout the month of February as we focus on four themes designed to educate and resource our ministry together. As United Methodists, we affirm our commitment to stand against racism. Each Monday in February we will focus on a specific aspect of Black history and racial justice, sharing videos, articles, and action steps to help congregations meaningfully participate.
February 3 (Week 1) – What is the Black College Fund, Why Does it Matter?

We’ll begin our observance of Black History Month by highlighting the long-standing support The United Methodist Church has shown for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through the Black College Fund. These institutions have shaped generations of Black leaders, pastors, and changemakers. Each week of the month on the homepage of the Conference website, www.eocumc.com, we will feature a different video showcasing past addresses from Black College Fund ambassadors to sessions of Annual Conference.
February 10 (Week 2) – Resources for Learning and Action from The UMC

Pastors, congregations, and faith communities of the East Ohio Conference are part of the great Connection of The United Methodist Church who resource and support ministries that are transforming lives. In Week 2 we’ll highlight articles, books, and studies from two of our general church agencies: the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) and the General Board of Church and Society. The resources are opportunities for churches and individuals engage in deeper learning.
February 17 (Week 3) – Engaging in and Learning about Black History in Ohio

Individuals, churches, and communities across the State of Ohio have played vital roles in Black history. In Week 3 we will feature information congregations can use to learn about and visit sites such as the Cleveland Civil Rights Trail and the Oberlin Underground Railroad Center.
February 24 (Week 4) – Faith-Based Resources for Worship & Study

We’ll conclude by sharing faith-based resources, including the “All in God’s Image” curriculum, worship materials, and ideas for incorporating Black History Month into church services.
As we move through Black History Month – and beyond – you are invited to learn, reflect, and act as part of our ongoing commitment to justice and equity in Christ’s name.
The February 10 Storyboard: Faith Witness Transformation podcast episode will focus on Black History Month. Take time to visit the resources on the Conference website, read E-News that is published every other Monday, and follow the East Ohio Conference on Facebook and social media.
