Bishop Hee-Soo Jung Installed as Resident Bishop of the Ohio Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church

Talitha Koum! These Aramaic words which translate to “little girl, get up” or “child arise” were spoken by Jesus to the daughter of Jairus in Mark 5:35-43. The phrase was at the core of Bishop Hee-Soo Jung’s message to the East Ohio Conference during the Service of Installation held on Saturday October 19 at Wooster United Methodist Church (Central Valley District).

Jung is the resident bishop of the new Ohio Episcopal Area, comprised of the East Ohio and West Ohio Conferences of The United Methodist Church. The two conferences are working together in new ways to minister to and with individuals and communities across the State of Ohio. During installation services in both Conferences in October the bishop challenged laity and clergy to rise up, share the Good News of God’s love for all, seek justice, and build a strong Ohio United Methodist Church.

“Ohio Land, rise up, rise up together so that Christ Jesus’ Good News can be spread to all those who are not yet with us, those who have not yet heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ, those who are not believing yet. We’re going to spread the love of God,” Jung proclaimed during his sermon at the Wooster UMC service.

During each of the installation services Jung received greetings from ecumenical partners, celebrated Holy Communion, and was presented with symbols of episcopal leadership: a pastoral crosier, The Bible, a font of water, the bread and cup, a towel and basin, a pastoral stole, The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church, and a gavel to preside at Annual Conference.

A reception was held following the services where guests could greet Bishop Jung and his wife, Rev. Im-Hyon.
